4th gen tow mirrors with light on a 3rd gen

Recommended Posts

I decided to do a dedicated thread on this since I could find too much info on how to wire these things correct. I also stumbled across a kit that allows having driving light and turn signals on the mirrors when they are only wired for one or the other.

The installation of the mirrors is pretty straight forward. You have to remove the inner door panel to get to all three bolts holding the mirrors on.

It’s tough to see in the picture above but there are 3 extra wires coming from the mirrors.

Purple - turn signal

Blue - puddle light

Black - ground

I removed the door speaker and fished these 3 wires through the accordion boot in the door jam. From the passenger side I added a 3 wire plug so if I ever had to remove the door the plug can be undone.

I was digging around trying to find where the wires were located for the dome lights and turn signals and I stumbled across this kit from Boost Auto Parts.

It is made for 4th gen trucks to add the driving lights to the stock turn signals on the mirrors. I had to try it![emoji1787]

It worked great!

So I was able to tap the white wire with a yellow stripe, running down the drivers side a-pillar. That gave me the factory delay and dimming effect of the dome lights. Since all my dome lights are LEDs, they match the puddle lights perfectly.

I couldn’t identify the wire in the a-pillar for the driving lights. I ended up running the wire for that up to the cab clearance lights.

For the turn signals, I ran both wires through the firewall. When the inner fender well is taken out on the drivers side, you will see the wire harness for the taillights right under where the clutch pedal hits the firewall. You want to tap the white wire with a dark green stripe for the drivers side turn signal, and the white wire with a yellow stripe for the passenger side. That was pretty much it.

Here is a video of the lights working.

Nice! Looks like a clean I stall too!

Yeah, it turned out pretty good. I’m really glad I found the kit for having both driving lights and turn signals. It was really bothering me that I was going to have to pick one.

Cool mod. I was thinking about grabbing a couple or resistors and doing the mirror turn signal/ running light mod to my truck.

It was only $55.00 for the kit. I figured I would spend most of that in parts trying to do it myself... and screw it up.

The only change I would make is to make the light flash on and off even with the marker lights on. I think the blinker function gets lost with the background light. But you are right, the kit makes it easy.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed in the contrast between the driving light and the turn signal. I think it will look better in the dark. Also I have since "smoked" the lens and it help a little also. Still, I think it is still better this way than one or the other.

Hoss, this might not be the case on your year of truck but my 2012 had puddle lights that failed and when I checked into it I learned that its a sealed dumb azz design and if I wanted the lights to work, I had to replace the mirrors!

I suspect someone somewhere has figured out a better more economical fix.

When I was researching the wiring for this, I came across a video on YouTube where a guy was replacing his factory LEDs with aftermarket as the factory were junk. I on

y paid $100.00 for the mirror set. These are specific to fit 3rd Gens trucks. If the price was the same for the 4th gen replacements, I would do like Hoss suggested and just change the complete mirror set.

I should add to this thread that I have towed a couple of times now. I also put the camper on the truck. These mirrors are quite an improvement over the stock 3rd gen two mirrors. They are a bit longer so now I can actually see a little bit behind the camper on the passenger side. Much better visibility.

After looking closely this morning in the dark I have not the side LEDs on the passenger side and only one on the driver's side working, neither of the forward leds work on either side and one puddle light is out.
I checked on Amazon and found sealed waterproof replacements for all four lights for a total of $82.00 I think I will try this route before I replace the mirrors

FYI very common to leak from

factory. May want to search how to seal better as well.

Dave I looked on their website and they have two versions the one Ben has and another one that makes all the lights blink together and I think it shows up a lot better but they cost a little more.

Good find. I would be good with that one for sure. I may have to give it a go.
