7.3 engine knocking

Recommended Posts

A buddy of mine has a 2000 or 01 superduty with the 7.3 and about 170K. It recently started knocking, to me it sounds kinda like it's a bad injector, and the truck had a code for a problem with the number 7 injector, but it was pulled and tested and said to be good. The knock is there while running and speeds up with engine speed, it's also there if you use a remote starter and spin the engine over that way, with the key off. All the rockers and pushrods on the passenger side of the engine look good, the glow plugs have also been pulled and are not broken. I should add that the noise has been singled out to be coming from the passenger side of the engine. My buddy now thinks that the problem is internal in the engine and is looking for a good shop to take the truck to in the Woodland/Vancouver WA area. Any suggestions on where to take it would be great, or if you know what might be causing this knock any help would be appreciated.

sounds like time for a Cummins conversion :) ... especially if internal issues . a swap would be in the $$ range of a rebuilt blue oval job

If the #7 injector failed the contribution test.... I would run a compression test. I bet the 7 hole will be low.

Thought I would update this now that the truck is fixed. My buddy took the truck to RPM Motorsports in Ridgefield, they found one piston with a broken skirt, and one cracked piston.
