Howdy all long time no post lol.. I had a great experience with my truck as of a few weeks ago. I had 2 yep 2 broken headstuds on my motor. Aperently if you dont back them off a thread or so when putting them in when you go to torque the head down the stud will turn a bit and put added psi on the the thread hole and crack the underside of the hole and allow coolant into the thread hole and weakin the the bolt and blow the the darn bolt out into the hood causing a nice geyser of coolant and f...ing up the gasket and driving me to break my back replaceing the bolts and gasket
so if your gona do this job the first time apply pipe dope to the the threads and and back the studs off a thread or two. Lesson learened.. ARP does not tell you to do this and I hope I get some cash back from them but as we all know prob not...

Add thread sealant down the holes, not on stud itself. That way, when you thread stud in place, sealant does not come out & you won't have a mess to clean up, before installing head gasket
Thanks Piers you guys have helped me out a bunch..... Now it's going back together. Your way of course lol...

That sucks, now I'm wondering when mine are going to snap. I never read anything about this before doing my studs and now I'm starting to see a bit more of it. Here's some good reading on the subject over at TDR.

So as I'm assembling the top end, I backed all the studs out a good half turn? But now I'm thinking about some sealer, but I can't install all the studs as I don't have clearance on the firewall to get the head on. So before I do my final torque, I can apply sealant to the threads, but getting sealant down a hole might be a little tricky on those long studs??? If the head is already torqued...I shouldn't have a prob with sealant and head gasket?
