In 2006 my lift pump went out on my totally stock truck. Since I was a long ways from a Dodge dealer I replaced the pump myself. Since it had coded for the lift pump I took it to a Dodge dealer who cleared the codes and said it was fine. Since then the mileage and performance have sucked. In an earlier forum I was told that the diesel engine 5 year 100,000 mile warranty starts AFTER the 3/36 ends for a total of 8/136,000. So I took it to a Dodge dealer who vehemently denies its covered at all, even though the damage to the injector pump had to have occurred under 5/100,000 when the lift pump failed. Assuming my arguements with Dodge are fruitless, I need to replace the Injector Pump. The truck is a 2001 with the 5.9L. Is this something I can do myself (the manual doesn't seem to say it's too bad) and where can I get a good pump at reasonable price. I'm in the Phoenix area for the time being. Thanks guys!

Give Rip a call. http://www.sourceautomotive.biz/

I would bet he has one in stock and would walk you through the install process.

The warranties on the Cummins don't last 8 yrs and 136,000 miles. Especially on trucks 2002 and older.
It only goes to 5yrs 100,000. total.

Just for what it's worth. That was the statement in my Warranty Book for the 04 I just traded in. Cummins Warranty starts after the 3/36,000 from Dodge.

A steering wheel puller will work also in lieu of a gear puller. The bolts from the air horn will thread into the gear in case you don't have metric bolts on hand. You'll need a stack of washers though.

There is a large torx bit required for the back bracket. I don't remember if it's a T-45 or a T-50 though. blushie.gif

IMHO, it's easiest to remove the fuel lines completely. Leave the clamps that hold the group of lines on the fuel lines. This includes the one right behind the pump. Just remove the bolt through the intake plenum cover. The fuel lines go around in the same sequence as the firing order in case you take them all apart (1-5-3-6-2-4).

Just because; I use a wrench on the delivery valves to keep them from turning when the fuel lines are loosened and tightened.

Pull the large nut off of the shaft at the gear. Use your finger or a small mirror to see if the key is on top. If not, use a wrench on the alternator nut, turn it backwards, and get the key pointed up. The VP does NOT need to be timed, so close is good. The up position is strictly to help you keep from loosing the key into the oil pan.

Best of luck!

Check your warranty booklet in your owner's manual and read it carefully. It states that the Cummins 5year/100k starts after the 3year/36k warranty. Mine does.

I am arguing with Dodge about this warranty. The book DOES say the engine warranty starts AFTER the 3/36 Dodge warrany. To me that says the 5/100 begins then and goes to 8/136. Dodge says that it means that after Dodge covers the engine for 3/36 then Cummins covers it out to 5/100. The graph in the front of the books shows just that but I am arguing that it is not what it says. Don't have much hope they will see it my way. If anybody has had success with this I would sure like to hear about it.

Who are you talking with? The local dealers Service Manager? If so, move up the food chain and talk with the Regional Service Director/Manager (the dealer Service Managers boss).

Sounds like you might have a good argument. Good Luck.

There is someone on TDR that was successful at this. He went and talked to the dealer owner and he made it happen.

I would search the 24V section of this site turbodieselregister.com

There you go, call BS on them. Cummins has absolutely nothing to do with the warranty. Dodge buys the engines from Cummins without any warranty. Dodge covers it.

Over at TDR someone posted about what the warranty says....... Dodge made a mistake in the wording apparently. It took him telling Dodge that he's going to an attorney about the wording and Dodge finally agreed to pay for it. Now they can't go back on thier word, but, you have to fight for it to get it.

Hope this helps

I purchased an injector pump from Rip and installed it without major problems. The only problem occurred on trying to start the engine as the manual I was using did not specify the correct procedure for bleeding the air out of the injector lines. A quick call to Rip and proper bleeding and the truck started right up. Mileage and performance have returned to the pre-lift pump failure levels. The Dodge Regional DIrector denied our claim. We have send a letter to the Good Sam Club Action Line requesting Dodge pay for the pump and why they should. If that fails we plan to take Dodge to Small Claims Court. I can't imagine that a Judge would have read that paragraph in the warranty manual the way Dodge wants it read. If anybody has had success against Dodge on this warranty issue I would sure like to hear about it. Thanks!

Good luck and glad to hear you got it running again.

Is it really worth your time in small claims court for the cost of a pump?

Since your truck is over 5 years old I doubt you'll have much luck. In the 8+ years I've been on TDR & this board I've never ever seen anyone get warranty coverage more than a few miles past 100,000 nor beyond 5 years. The warranty book might be misleading but it's always been known the engine warranty is concurrent and doesn't go beyond 5/100k.
